JANUARY 2010

To Our Valued Customer,

Welcome to 2010!

2009 really has been the best of years and the worst of years - many of us were challenged to drive innovation and make things happen in changing and difficult circumstances. We were stretched and challenged to overcome different goals, and were constantly faced with the medias doom and gloom of the state of the economy. But as things move forward the economy has bounced back and 2010, for many, will be full of new visions and goals to bounce back from slow markets. The new year also brings about new tidings for Australian businesses, with the Australian economy predicted to grow 2.50% positioning us all for a positive 2010.

This month we wanted to take a look at what the year has in store and the new technology trends that are already emerging including more on-line solutions, smaller and faster devices, Windows 7 on all our devices, and solutions to keep your IT infrastructure up and running 24x7.

Until next time...

Warm Regards,

Technology is constantly changing and never stops moving. But what are the new and exciting technologies and trends that CEOs, CIO's and IT managers need to keep an eye on in 2010?

Well, where do you start? There are so many new gadgets, new mobile devices, not to mention the introduction of what is classified as ‘strategic technology’ that has the potential to impact on all facets of business operation in the next few years. Andor Systems has identified a few top picks of business technology trends that will help companies grow their business in 2010.

Cloud Computing (Coming soon to Andor)
Cloud Computing may be still viewed as a buzz word in some industries, however, according to Gartner this form of Software as a Service has been labeled as the most strategic technology for 2010 because it “allows business owners to rearrange and reduce costs.” Put simply, cloud computing is a style of service that offers computer power or data storage via the internet. As the service evolves it will dramatically influence how enterprises do business and in turn reduce overall costs of backup and data storage.

Green IT
Green based business with be huge in 2010 affecting everything from servers and storage devices to smart phones and mobile devices. Businesses and consumers will continue to embrace energy efficient practices in the workplace and at home to help minimise carbon footprints. Common green initiatives include the use of e-documents, reducing travel via video and teleconferencing, virtualisation as well as newly developed servers and desktops that function on less power and are more energy efficient.

Online Social Networking and Computers becoming involved in our daily lives
As the lines between professional and personal communication become increasingly blurred, we have seen a transition of how we incorporate computers into our everyday lives. Nowadays, we see our technology as connected to both emotional and social aspects of our lives. This also refers to online social networking sites. The difficulty for businesses however, is how to harness the feasibility and usability of these sites to benefit business operation; after all, it is free.

Virtualisation
Virtualisation has been mentioned frequently in the media and continues to evolve at an impressive pace, becoming even more widely spread in 2010. It has been widely recognised as an effective way for companies to juggle many operating systems and applications. Andor vendors such as VMWare, Microsoft and Citrix are all emphasising the benefits of virtualisation to reduce the amount of server and storage hardware within their data centers. These companies promote the opportunity to reduce expenses by streamlining hardware which essentially lets one computer do the job of multiple computers, by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments. Thus resulting in higher availability of resources, better desktop management and increased security and disaster recovery processes. According to Gartner, virtualisation will become a part of standard disaster recovery technique, as the practice of moving virtual machines from one location to another matures. The idea of desktop virtualisation is also powering a new round of thinking about whether thin clients and a cheaper alternative to PC's

Smarter and faster mobile devices
The move from desktop and laptop computers to mobile devices have made connecting with colleagues, customers and suppliers so much easier at the click of a button. The intelligence of the PC has found its way into far more devices than we can have ever imagined. Many companies have already integrated lightweight mobile devices to benefit tactical business operations to eventually incorporate them into more strategic frameworks. According to Gartner, it is expected that within the next five years, 50% of mobile devices will become a part of our normal business operations and will include radio-frequency identification chips (RFID) to use near field communication (NFC) and two- way technology, we will also see the introduction of more touch screens devices.

Microsoft Upgrades
2010 will see the emergence of a number of Microsoft and Windows updates starting the year off with making the switch to Windows 7 professional and Smart phone users upgrading to Windows 7 Mobile. Businesses this year will also see the emergence of Office and Sharepoint 2010 giving IT managers multiple upgrades to consider.

In summation, 2010 promises to be a particularly exciting year with a mix of both new and improved technologies. Talk to your account manager today to see how any of these new technologies can enhance your business.
