For many corporate executives, going green has not only become a mainstream for many industries but a commonplace and going beyond the public relations “social responsibility” of years past.

Everywhere we turn we have ‘Green’ messages in our faces, plastered all over billboards, on the news and in the papers, which in most cases is not necessarily a bad thing. In recent years, a growing amount of individuals have tried to make a conscious effort to minimise their carbon footprint by taking a more green approach to life within their households, businesses, transport and technology. But, for many of us, the idea of going green or becoming ecologically friendly seems hard, expensive or even still a bit of a grey area.

Fortunately many of the major players in the technology industry including Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Google, Citrix and CISCO have been paving the way for us. These companies have been making a strong effort to show themselves as being green ambassadors. This is due to the increase of modern life becoming more digital, and as the awareness of the environmental impacts of computers and gadgets moves from negligible to considerable. This is shown by Gartner research publishing that PC’s and monitors are contributing 39% of the IT CO2 emissions, while servers are contributing 23% – the rest of the CO2 from IT comes from our networks, telecoms and printers. Which many would agree is pretty alarming.

In a conscious effort to showcase how these eco concerns are faced, HP now owns a massive e-waste recycling plant with 100 percent recyclable machines. HP now reduces thousands of kilos of computer debris each month and will also take back any brand of equipment. According to HP's VP of social and environmental responsibility, “We do not do things to be good, but most of what we do is select things that have a brand value to them and has to make business sense.” IBM has also undertaken this type of recycling initiative and takes back and recycles all end-of-life IBM computers, printers, scanners and monitors.

Google however, has opted for a different approach to green business with the plan to spend millions of dollars to assist in the development of renewable energy technologies. This initiative will see Google partner with companies across the world to harness energy based technologies such as solar, geothermal and wind. According to Google co-founder, profit is not the chief motivator, “we just want the problem solved.”

Microsoft is playing a part by creating operating systems with additional efficiencies that reduce power consumption and can help lower energy costs. Microsoft has also just released a new program called ‘Hohm’ which is a free web-based application that helps save consumers money and energy, allowing them to view computer usage. “The lowering of energy consumption is as important for us as new uses of software and IT for the environment.” Steve Ballmemer, Microsoft CEO.

CISCO and Citrix have both undertaken the collective viewpoint that energy efficient data centers are integral to ensure that there is a slowing of growth of power consumption. This is achieved by consolidating or offloading server workloads in the data center and reducing the energy consumption of user devices in the office. As a result, only the hardware that is needed to meet user requirements is actually being used.

The question must be raised, however, are all these corporations experiencing a sudden reaction of social consciousness? Well, not exactly. We are witnessing this trend due to an increasing realisation that this can be considered to be a new way to cut costs and ensure that new efficient ways of doing business are implemented.

In the mean time, turn off your PC before you go home and you will at least be making a difference for that day.

A New reason to consider investing in Work from home technologies

In an effort to help employees balance their work and family obligations the Australian Government has introduced a new grants program 'Work & Family' providing grants of $5,000 - $15,000 to help employers offer flexible working options. Not only can this offer you employment benefits in employee retention and job satisfaction, it can offer you a green business edge.

The program is designed to help SMB's develop long term sustainable options to offer employment flexibility. Andor can help you set up the equipment you need for your employees to efficiently work from home, including a terminal server, allowing you to offer work from home solutions, and receive the many benefits that go with this. The 2010 information on who can apply for funding has not yet been made available but will be published once finalised by Grantslink.

Microsoft Internet Explorer Update!

As you may already be aware, there have been recent warnings in the media relating to the vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and to take precautions to protect your business from an online attack.

However, at present, Microsoft are only seeing a limited number of targeted attacks against a small group of companies, and the attacks they have seen so far are only effective against Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft are not finding any widespread attacks and so far, have not seen any security attacks focused on consumers.

Andor Systems Advice to keep your data protected:

• We strongly recommend that customers using Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7 upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 as soon as possible to benefit from the improved security protections it offers

• We recommend that customers using Windows XP SP2 upgrade to Windows XP SP3

• Ensure you have the necessary security programs to support your business
